- Title
Effects of Homocysteine-Lowering With Folie Acid Plus Vitamin B12 vs Placebo on Mortality and Major Morbidity in Myocardial Infarction Survivors.
- Abstract
The article offers information on a double-blind randomized controlled study which examined the consequences of limiting homocysteine levels with folic acid and vitamin B12 on vascular and nonvascular outcomes. Study subjects were survivors of myocardial infarction in secondary care hospitals in Great Britain between 1998 and 2008. Main outcome measures included first major coronary event, fatal or nonfatal stroke or noncoronary revascularization. A discussion on the research findings is detailed. Researchers concluded that substantial long-term reductions in blood homocysteine levels with folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation are not associated with vascular outcomes nor with adverse effects on cancer incidence.
