- Abstract
The article discusses a study which investigated trends and characteristics of emergency department (ED) visits in the U.S. from 1997 to 2007. Changes in ED visits were described by sociodemographic group, designation of safety-net ED, as well as trends in ambulatory care-sensitive conditions. Data were taken from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) and annual U.S. Census estimates were used to calculate visit rates. The researchers discovered an increase in ED visit rates.
