- Abstract
The article discusses a study which examined the relationship between elder self-neglect or abuse reported to social services agencies and all-cause mortality among a community-dwelling elderly population in Chicago, Illinois. The study enrolled in 1993-2005 several residents living in three adjacent neighborhoods of Chicago, who were participating in the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP) and had suspected elder self-neglect or abuse reported to social services agencies. It was found that 1544 of 9318 CHAP participants had experienced elder self-neglect and 113 were reported for elder abuse. Elder self-neglect was found to be associated with an increased risk of 1-year mortality based on multivariate analyses conducted.
