- Abstract
The article presents information on bariatric surgery in the context of the treatment of obesity in the U.S. It reports that bariatric surgical procedure is conducted in people with severe obesity or whose body mass index (BMI) is greater than 35. It highlights that people should discuss the risks of bariatric surgery with their physicians. Most surgeons involved in bariatric surgery believe that the operations work best when the patients incorporate lifelong dietary and behavioral changes and highlight the use of lifelong vitamin supplementation to avoid the complications.
