- Abstract
The holidays of teachers and the opportunities they have is an issue that has been constantly discussed compared to other professions. In terms of holidays, it is clear that there are some stereotyped judgements and thoughts regarding the teaching profession. These are based on the beliefs that teachers take too many or long holidays and have extra spare time outside of lessons at the weekdays. The teaching profession is sometimes criticized in these respects, and sometimes it may even be the reason for the choice of this profession. However, teaching is a demanding job and has wearisome effects. In schools and classrooms where noise and chaos may often occur and where anything may develop very quickly, teachers are mostly expected to establish a perfect order. However, it is known that teachers who do not have annual leave rights as like other professions, naturally take advantage of the holiday opportunities offered to students. When it is considered that teachers devote some time for seminars and some other professional works during these holiday periods, the opportunity for extra and long holidays attributed to the teaching profession may lose its attractiveness. Therefore, it seems that it is necessary to review how the holidays continue for teachers. This review study which is carried out by examining the relevant literature and legislation includes a general critical assesment on holidays of teachers working in public schools. From this point of view, in the study, firstly the concept of holiday and teacher holiday were investigated, then examples from the world regarding teacher holidays were presented and legal regulations were discussed.
