Title

Race and Gender Representations in Advertising in Cable Cartoon Programming.

Authors

Merskin, Debra L.

Abstract

This article focuses on race and gender in television advertisements. The author found in her research of advertisements airing on the Turner Cartoon Network, that white and African American children are exhibited more often than other minority children. Additionally, girls were portrayed in the home while boys performed more active, outdoor activities in the commercials. The author argues that these commercials present stereotypes regarding race, ethnicity, and gender present in the U.S to children. Topics include social learning theory, a child's perception of self, and the effect of television on children.
