- Abstract
In the south-eastern quadrant of the Iberian Peninsula, there has been a succession of ways of organising the irrigators who receive water from the same intake (inheritance of water, community of owners, civil society of goods, board of users, community of irrigators, etc.). These are models of governance in the management of a scarce resource such as water for irrigation. The research is a regional, diachronic and comparative study of the use of water for irrigation in the Region of Murcia, in which the loss of autonomy and self-management of irrigators in the administration of water is analysed, to be finally supervised by the State through the hydrographic confederations. It is a case study of traditional historical irrigation systems in Calasparra, Molina de Segura, Librilla, Fortuna and Abanilla. An extensive search for original sources has been carried out in the archives of heredamientos and irrigation communities, in those of several municipalities, and in those of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura. Fieldwork in the irrigation perimeters and interviews with water collection and distribution managers have allowed us to discover the singularities of the governance between farmers and irrigators, as well as the features of the cultural landscapes constructed by these water uses.
