- Abstract
This article explores the connection between oral diseases and mental health, emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary approach to address the mental health needs of dental patients. It discusses the bidirectional relationship between mental, oral, and somatic health, highlighting the impact of mental health issues on dental health and the importance of early recognition and treatment. The article also discusses the behavioral changes and oral symptoms associated with mental illnesses. It concludes by emphasizing the need for a mental health liaison service in dentistry practices to improve diagnosis and referral. Additionally, the article highlights the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene to prevent conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and the impact of mental illnesses on oral health. It suggests including questions about oral health in mental health diagnostic questionnaires to facilitate further research on the link between mental health and oral health. The document is a list of references cited in an article titled "Neuromuscular Dentistry - Vision of Tomorrow" published in the International Journal of Romanian Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. The references cover a range of topics related to oral health, mental health, and their interconnections, including the impact of oral health on mental health, the association between mental disorders and oral diseases, the role of the oral microbiota in anxiety and mood disorders, and the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases such as diabetes and cancer. The references also touch on the impact of medication on oral health, the prevalence of xerostomia (dry mouth), and the barriers to accessing dental care.
