Abstract

Biological invasions pose a serious threat to ecosystems and biodiversity. Insects, as the most diverse group of animals on the planet, are significantly affected by these changes, which is reflected in the increased occurrence of non-native species in all habitats. These species include Ctenolepisma longicaudatum, which has become a significant pest in European interiors in recent years. This species, which is probably native to Central America, is able to survive in dry and cold conditions and causes damage to cellulose-based materials, paper, and starch, which is a particularly problematic issue for museums, archives, libraries, and galleries. Ctenolepisma longicaudatum reproduces and spreads quickly, posing a challenge to Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Traditional control methods, such as the use of pesticides, are not always effective and can have negative impacts on health and the environment. Therefore, it is crucial to use a combination of methods including monitoring, quarantine, sanitation, and safe use of baits. It is essential to raise awareness about this pest and take preventive measures to protect cultural heritage. This article summarizes the current state of research and measures regarding the control and prevention of the spread of Ctenolepisma longicaudatum in collecting institutions and heritage institutes.
