- Abstract
The funerary diadem found during rescue archaeological research in 2006 is decorated with freshwater pearls and red stones. In order to identify the embedded red stones, the diadem was subjected to gemological research in 2019. The aim was to identify the red stones embedded in the port, possibly to find out their provenance and to try to determine the period when they were processed. Classical and modern gemological methods were used in the actual identification and determination of the provenance of the examined stones. To determine the period of manufacturing, a comparison was first used between the stones to be described and stones that were processed using the same or similar technology and that are set in objects whose period of origin has been documented. Since the manufacture of jewelry and decorative objects has always been characterized by a certain degree of "recycling" of older objects in the production of new pieces, the use of the comparative method has a limited degree of accuracy in the dating the processing of stones. Due to the fact that the diadem is decorated with freshwater (river) pearls, it was possible to date the time of manufacture by determining the age of the pearls using the 14C radiocarbon method.
