The study describes an experiment based on the Chinese method for consolidation of degraded silk using fibroin and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) published in 2021 at the ICOM - CC conference in Beijing. The advantage of this treatment, compared to the consolidation agents used so far, is the application of a substance that has the same chemical composition as silk. The initial phase of our study was to validate the aforementioned fibroin application procedure and to evaluate the use of the method in museum practice. The fibroin and EGDE application procedure was first tested on reference silk samples. Afterwards, suitable historical objects from the collections of the Prague City Museum were selected and treated with fibroin, cleaned and adjusted. The condition of the objects was documented before and after the application of the consolidant as well as after the cleaning process. Optical microscopy and organoleptic examination were used for evaluation. The experiment is the basis for a longer-term project in which we will focus on further possibilities and applications of the method.
