Abstract

The article presents approaches to the treatment of a set of technical drawings on tracing paper, which form an important part of cultural heritage in the field of history of science, technology and industry. It also summarizes the material characteristics of tracing paper and the risks of its damage. The concept of conservation and restoration intervention is described, which is conducted with the aim of treating the collection as a whole as efficiently and as gently as possible, and with respect to the need of its digitization. The attention therefore focuses especially on partial procedures for stabilising the degradation processes in as many of the preserved documents as possible. Methods of basic survey of the extent of damage, mechanical and chemical cleaning, removal of inappropriate additions, fixing serious defects, moistening and straightening of documents, including possibilities of their adjustments and conditions for storage of large-format drawings are summarized. The text is accompanied by examples of treatment including photographs of selected tracing papers from the collection of the Technical Museum in Brno.
