- Abstract
Background: The cryopreservation of preantral ovarian follicles offers an alternative for extending the reproductive lifespan of animals with high genetic value or those that are endangered. Additionally, it holds significance in human medicine for fertility preservation prior to chemotherapy treatments. Since mammalian ovaries contain a substantial number of preantral follicles, the in vitro culture of thawed follicles could provide access to a significant quantity of oocytes, which can be matured and fertilized in vitro. The resulting embryos can either be transferred or cryopreserved for future use. Objectives: The aim of the current study is to summarize previous results regarding the in vitro culture of preantral follicles (PAF) in laboratory animals (mice) and companion animals (dogs), as well as to provide new data on the possibilities related to PAF in vitro culture (IVC) in livestock animals (pigs). Materials and Methods: Follicles were isolated from ovaries and divided into three groups: fresh, OPS vitrified and cryotube vitrified, and cultured in vitro. Throughout the in vitro growth period, follicle diameter and estradiol production were monitored. Results and Discussion: OPS (and open vitrification systems in general) could be suitable for the simultaneous cryopreservation of a large number of isolated follicles. The technique ensures viability for short-term in vitro culture after thawing.
