Abstract
Studying midwifery is intense, and as a student midwife I find it quite challenging to constantly absorb theory, guidelines and protocols while learning new skills. It is hard to imagine that one day very soon I will fly solo, practising safely without a mentor prompting and supporting me. It is still a bit of a mystery to me how to be not just a safe practitioner, but become truly autonomous in my decision-making, and advocate for women in complex situations. Using Gibbs’ reflective cycle (1988), I reflected on an inspirational example of autonomous practice and woman-centred care in placement that showed me that it can be done.
