Abstract

Methanol, ethanol, aeetone, ethyl aeetate and hot water extraets of different parts (leaves, seeds, fruits and twigs fraetions) of Psidium guajava L. were investigated for their antibaeterial aetivities against 8 baeterial isolates. Inhibitory effeets of P guajava L. extraets have been sereened by disediffusion method (Zone of inhibition, ZI), aetivity index (AI) and minimum inhibitory eoneentration (MIC) determination. Ciprofloxaein antibiotie was used as standard for P. guajava L. antimierobial aetivity eomparison. From the ZI, AI and MIC values, methanolie and hot water extraets of twigs < 1em diameter were the most potent against all tested miero-organisms by showing the highest ZI and AI value and the lowest MIC values. Whereas, no inhibitory aetivity was reeorded for both seeds and fruits extraets using all tested solvents. These observations make this plant a potential souree that ean be used in management ofbaeterial infeetions. Moreover, methanolie and hot water extraets of twigs < 1em required further in depth study.
