Abstract

The climatic characteristics of the semiarid region strongly influence the dynamics of the vegetation cover and soil, as well as environmental variables such as albedo and vegetation indices, among others. Researches in the semiarid region of Paraiba state have been carried out applying methodologies to analyze these variables, mainly based on orbital data that have subsidized the monitoring of the different landscapes in the caatinga biome. Thus, this paper aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution and the quantification of surface albedo and SAVI vegetation index in different caatinga vegetation typologies in the Experimental Basin of São João do Cariri, Paraíba state. TM/Landsat-5 sensor images were used. The results showed that the albedo estimate was influenced by the spatial distribution of the vegetation typologies, which evidenced the level of land degradation, while the values obtained with the SAVI estimate did not present the pattern generally defined for the reflectance of the vegetation in the rainy or dry seasons in the study area.
