Abstract

Heirloom varieties are present in several peasant communities in Brazil. They are important agents for traditional knowledge, production diversity, income, food and socio-cultural practices, and enhanced socio-bioagricultural diversity. In two communities located in the state of Goiás, we identified six families as guardians of these varieties. Through participant observation and interviews, we discovered that 146 plant varieties were cultivated and three species of heirloom animals were raised, which is considered high diversity. Management is associated with agroecological and/or organic practices and the use of varieties facilitate the peasant way of life in these communities.
