Abstract

This work aims to assess the sperm quality in farmed environment by studying the physical and biochemical parameters of seminal plasma which may contribute to evaluating the good quality seed. An analysis of sperm characteristics provides a reasonable basis for developing a strategy for maximizing the fertility of a fish. A total of 30 fish samples were taken for the present study. The present study reported 85.06 ± 9.29mg/dl glucose, 0.917±0.62g/dl total protein, 12.3±5.22 mg/dl triglyceride and 28.4±4.47mg/dl urea in the captive culture conditions. Physical analysis showed the mean sperm volume 1.486±0.17, mean sperm motility 68.9± 2.27%, mean movement duration 44.66±2.46s, mean sperm density 3.84±0.031109/ml and mean pH 8.5±0.051. This information will help to develop cryopreservation procedures, to meet species-specific extender requirements and to optimize artificial fertilization procedures in common carp, Cyprinus carpio var. communis.
