Abstract: The objective of the paper is to analyze the origin and the evolution of the explanatory value of the construction , documented in Castilian texts from the Middle Ages. Through a relatively large corpus of Latin texts (5th--12th centuries) and Spanish texts (13th--15th centuries), the Author explores the main linguistic and discursive reasons that determined its use in the Spanish language
