- Abstract
Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-induced lipodystrophy refers to a serious metabolic syndrome in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, characterised by the development of dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and abnormal redistribution of body fat (peripheral lipoatrophy and lipohypertrophy). Lipohypertrophy refers to abnormal fat accumulation occurring commonly in the intra-abdominal compartment, breast, dorsocervical area (buffalo hump) or under the skin (lipomas). We report a case of HAART-induced lipodystrophy with a massive accumulation of adipose tissue in the dorsocervical region posted for liposuction.
