Abstract

This study aimed to analyze, in the light of the New Institutional Economics (NIE), the organizational and institutional arrangements for raw material extraction in the Brazilian pulp and paper industry. More specifically, the objectives were to contextualize the organizations and institutions in the light of the NIE, and to describe the information reported by Brazilian pulp and paper companies on their organizational and institutional arrangements in the raw material supply stage. For this purpose, bibliographical and documentary procedures were used in a qualitative approach with descriptive objectives. The companies in this sector listed on the B3, the main Brazilian stock exchange, were researched. The data was collected from information published by the companies on their websites and in their annual or sustainability reports. Considering the interrelationship between organizations and institutions, aiming at economic performance and adaptation to environmental pressures, it was found that most of the raw materials come from the internal structure, corresponding to the hierarchy. Only Klabin contracts with external suppliers. However, through the lens of NIE, defining the best structure involves a qualitative analysis that goes beyond simple autonomous choice and takes into account the complex and dynamic institutional environment.
