- Abstract
Background: The body's ability to produce insulin is affected by a group of chronic metabolic diseases known as diabetes. Someone has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas is not producing enough insulin or because the body's cells are not using insulin that is being produced effectively. Present study tried to explore whether there was any association of galanin with urea, uric acid, creatinine, albumin, globulin, total protein, albumin-to-globulin ratio, fasting glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: This study included 42 patients; and 42 healthy controls (HCs); who served as a control group. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the level of galanin in serum. While levels of urea, uric acid, creatinine in addition fasting serum glucose (FSG) were determined by enzymatic colorimetric methods, albumin, globulin and total protein (T. protein) were estimated by colorimetric methods. Results: The Study found that level of serum galanin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was higher compared to healthy subjects (P 6.14 ng/mL), FSG (> 116.5 mg/dL), Urea (> 30.5 mg/dL), Uric acid ( 0.835 mg/dL), T. Protein ( 2.75 g/dL) and ALB/GLB (< 1.545). Conclusion: Serum galanin may be used as a biomarker the detection o.
