- Abstract
Objective: Ophthalmology is the medical area dedicated to taking care of the eye health of individuals and is present in all means of health care. Its correct understanding is essential for the correct management of ocular and visual disorders. The objective of the study was to analyze the level of general ophthalmological knowledge of medical students who have already attended the course of ophthalmology at a university in the South of Santa Catarina. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data collection took place through the Google Forms platform. Two hundred forty-two forms of students from the 6th to the 12th semester were collected. Results: There was a general average of 32.7% correct answers, no question obtained more than 80% correct answers, and there was no relation between the student's semester and their performance. The percentage of correct answers among women was 34.1% (143), against 30.6% (99) for men. Conclusions: It was concluded that the level of ophthalmological knowledge of academics was unsatisfactory in all semesters analyzed, and that measures to support curriculum improvements can be used, aiming at better knowledge in ophthalmology for future doctors.
