Abstract

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a prolonged inflammatory disorder of the arteries that leads to cardiovascular disorders (CVD) and cerebrovascular diseases, which are the primary reasons of death and disease. This study designed to examine the relationship of serum IL-4, IL-8 levels with some anthropometric measurements in Iraqi atherosclerosis patients. The research included 60 AS Iraqi patients and 24 healthy control matched in age and sex. Serum concentrations of IL-4, IL-8 were measured via commercially available ELISA kit. IL-4 and IL-8 concentrations were expressively different among AS patients and controls. Interestingly, IL-4 and IL-8 concentrations were greater in AS patients compared by healthy controls. Non-significant correlations between IL-4 and IL-8 with anthropometric measurements were observed. IL-4 and IL-8 are present at high levels in serum of patients with atherosclerosis, where they could show a dangerous part in the disease progression and these levels are non associated with the anthropometric measurements.
