The present research paper aims to determine the nature of social stigma among the families of people with intellectual disability in Saudi Arabia. It also identifies the social and psychological impacts of the social stigma against the families of people with intellectual disability. It develops a proposal for relieving the social and psychological impacts of social stigma among the families of people with intellectual disabilities in Saudi Arabia from the perspective of the general practice of social work. Therefore, the author adopted the descriptive-analytical approach and applied a questionnaire for data collection to a sample of (726) participants at daycare centers of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The results showed that the nature of social stigma among the families of people with intellectual disability from their perspective was characterized by the feeling of inequality among the people with disability and their normal peers. The social impacts of the stigma among the families of people with intellectual disability included the difficulty of educating people with intellectual disability. The psychological impacts of the stigma among the families of people with intellectual disability highlighted the fear for the future of their children with disabilities. The study recommends using the proposal for relieving the social and psychological impacts of social stigma among the families of people with intellectual disability from the perspective of the general practice of social work. It also recommends increasing specialized counseling centers and centers for social support to solve the social and psychological problems among the families of people with intellectual disability.
