- Abstract
Objective: measure the level of competitiveness in strawberry (Fragaria ananassa D.) production in Mexico for the period from 1980 to 2019 and with it, generate strategies that have a positive impact on increasing specialization. Design/methodology/approach: the methodology consists of the application of three indicators related to competitiveness and specialization at the macroeconomic and mesoeconomic levels, such as the location quotient, the Lafay International Specialization Indicator, and the Revealed Trade Advantage Index of Exports for the period. It includes from 1980 to 2017, for each of the states of the Mexican Republic and in comparison, with the United States. Results: strawberry production in Mexico is specialized since it has comparative advantages that the different states take advantage of and which allow the country, positioning itself as a net exporter and with a significant degree of importance within the country's strawberry exports to the United States market. Limitations of the study/implications: no limitations were found in terms of the data obtained from the secondary information sources necessary for the application of the methodology. However, the results are limited to the analysis of a single aspect that impacts competitiveness such as trade, and it would be interesting to study more variables that impact specialization and therefore improve competitiveness. Findings/conclusions: despite the favorable results in the calculation of the indicators, it is necessary to apply strategies that favor the increase in the specialization and competitiveness of strawberry production in Mexico and increase the profitability of producers.
