Abstract

Groundwater contamination around the ash pond of a thermal power plant is the major problem related to groundwater contamination by wet method of ash disposal. The influence of ash disposal from thermal power plant on groundwater quality was assessed in terms of physicochemical properties (pH, EC, TDS, Cl-, Hardness, Ca2 , Mg2 and SO42-) and trace elements (Fe and Pb). The study area was selected around the ash disposal site of Parichha Thermal Power Plant, Jhansi. The obtained results were compared with the BIS guidelines for drinking water quality. All the parameters were found to be exceeding the permissible limits prescribed by BIS at site 1 while on other sites only few parameters were exceeding the limit. Lead and iron concentration in all groundwater samples was higher than permissible limits prescribed by BIS for groundwater.
