The article discusses the presence of novel highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype (H5N8) strains from migratory birds sampled in Shanghai, China from October 2013 to December 2014. Topics discussed include the detected total number of 26 novel H5N8 viruses from migratory ducks and curlews, the collected H5N8 viruses from 16 common teals such as Anas creca and the identification of the 18 group B H5N8 isolates from the sampling dates.
