Awareness on Psychological Effects of Internet Addiction among Dental Students in a Private Dental College.

Abstract

In the past few years internet addiction and internet gaming disorder have become frequent among college students which leads to many personality disorders including low self esteem, poor quality of sleep, mood disorder. Internet addiction negatively influences our lives and will further lead to technology addiction. However technology or internet addiction may be positive for an individual, when it's used in a correct way. It can be positively used to build interaction among people virtually. The aim of the study is to determine the effects of internet addiction among college students. A cross sectional study was conducted among 107 dental students. The survey was circulated through online using google forms and questionnaires distributed among the students to assess the knowledge and awareness. The data was collected and analysed using SPSS . Chi square test was done to analyse the association between gender and awareness on effects of internet addiction. 55% of the study participants are aware of the psychological effects of internet addiction. The study revealed that awareness and knowledge about psychological effects of internet addiction among dental students were good.
