Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase E. Coli isolated from UTI Patients in Najaf Province, Iraq.

Abstract

Background:Extended spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBLs) that producing by Enterobacteriaceae are a growing global issue and important problem in hospital field, which is related to the excessive use of broad-spectrum antibiotics like ampicillin, amoxicillin and other B-lactam antibiotics. Materials and Methods: The current study was carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques, University Collage of Altoosi. A total of 76 E. coli UTI isolates were obtained from patients in Al-Sadr Hospital. The sample collection period was between July 2019 and October 2019. Results: In this study, 12 different antibiotics were used against E. coli. The result proved that the antimicrobial resistance rate of the 76 isolates to Ampicillin, Cloxacillin, Carbenicillin, Chloramphenicol and Penicillin were high (76 isolates 100%), Cefotaxime and Ceftriaxone (70 isolates 92%). Conclusion: The current study result showed that there is 19 (25%) isolates of E. coli from urinary tract infection having the ability to B-lactamase enzyme production.
