Abstract

Background:In our clinical practice we observe that post operativeopacification is more frequently associated with particular types of lens, in term of manufacturer origin, than others. This observation is shared by a number of authors who raised the issue of artificial lens quality in association with post IOL capsular opacification. However, controversy exists and no consensus can be easily obtained form available published articles with this regard. Aim of the study:we retrospectively collected data about 514 patients who underwent cataract surgery and IOL implantation, with a main objective of linking post IOL opacification, indicated by need for Yag laser capsulotomy, with the quality of artificial lens used, indicated by manufacturer origin. Patients and method:The present retrospective cohort study was carried out at Ibsar Surgery Center in Al- Najaf province, Iraq. The study started on March 2014 and extended through April 2017, lasting for approximately three years.Inclusion criteria was defined as all cases of cataract surgery by phacoemulsification with no intraoperative complications like posterior capsule rupture, no primary posterior capsule thickening or opacification at time of surgery, no history of trauma provided that all cases share the same surgeon and the same phacoemulsification machine (Infiniti Vision system by Alcon, USA), the same energy power setting and the same type of viscoelastic material used. Results:Iq lens was the most frequently use lens, therefore it was regarded as a reference for purpose of comparison. The need for Yag laser according to lens type varied from 0 to 100%; however, ceratin types of lenses were used very infrequently and rate in % may be magnified. Nevertheless, no significant variation was seen in any type of lens with respect to need of Yaq laser (P> 0.05. The need for Yag laser was no significantly correlated to age, gender and degree of the IOL. Conclusion:Based on our results and previous reports, the type of lens may affect the need to Yag laser to correct post operativeopacification however more research work is needed in order to reach a clear consensus with this regard.
