- Abstract
This article aims to demonstrate that an economic and political elite, from the south of Mato Grosso uno, aimed to ascend to state political power. Analyzing a bibliography referring to the theme, it was observed that, at the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century, that elite played a supporting role in the state political scenario, dominated by the political elite in Cuiabá. From the 1930s onwards, asouthern elite, realizing that it would be reaching power in Mato Grosso through the electoral route, constituted a divisive movement. The main justification for this was that the northern political elite lived at the expense of the Southern specialties. While the New State does not consider the territorial division, a political representation between North and South was balanced, and from the redemocratization, in 1945, the South surpasses the North in representativeness both in the Legislative and in the Executive. At that time, a southern political elite achieved its purpose of coming to power, and the division was no longer needed. However, for the interests of the military government, Mato Grosso was divided, creating Mato Grosso do Sul, that elite that once accused northerners of the delay in which the South lived, vying for power in the nascent state, maintaining it as previous practices.
