The article presents an overview of proposals which have been made to bundle acute and postacute payments for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries into one payment within 30 days of discharge from an acute care hospital. The proposals are contained in the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. A discussion of the history of the concept of payment bundling is presented. In the article the author offers his opinions on the benefits and disadvantages that are associated with bundling acute and postacute payments.
