- Abstract
Follicular cysts are a recurring pathology that affects dairy cattle, negatively affecting the reproductive indices of the herd. This results in a significant increase in the calving interval, leading to significant economic losses. For this reason, the objective of this study is to describe a case of follicular cysts in a Holstein cow in Nicaragua, Central America. While making a technical visit to a property located in the Masiguito region, belonging to the municipality of Camoapa, Boaco department, Nicaragua, an adult Holstein cow with good body condition score (3/5) was identified. According to the producer, the cow had been in anestrus for several months without showing signs of estrus manifestation. Through clinical inspection and reproductive ultrasound, the presence of multiple follicular cysts in the left ovary was diagnosed. In order to treat this condition, a hormonal treatment was implemented using analog drugs of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and prostaglandins (PGF2a). As a result, the animal experienced a return of the estrous cycle, confirmed by imaging examination that showed the absence of cysts. For this reason, it is important to consider this condition as a differential factor among reproductive pathologies that affect bovine fertility, emphasizing the fundamental role of ultrasound as the primary diagnostic tool.
