Abstract

The article presents a speech by Oliver J. Caldwell, Assistant Commissioner for International Education, U.S. Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, delivered at the Convention of the Southeastern Arts Association in Charlotte, North Carolina in April 1960. He discusses the significance of art in all its forms in the American curriculum, its role in human society and how art could become an antidote for materialism.
