Title

DOGMATISM AND ORIENTATIONS TOWARD LITURGICAL CHANGE.

Authors

DiRenzo, Gordon J.

Abstract

The article focuses on dogmatism and orientations towards liturgical change in the Roman Catholic Chruch. The findings are based on interviews with a 10 percent stratified sample drawn from two parishes in a town of 50,000 in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Interviews were held in May 1965 after subjects had six months' experience with liturgical changes, which included reversed position of altar and accompanying modifications in the celebrant's position, congregational singing and responses, English dialogue, lay commentators and the presentation of communion offerings by lay representatives. Attitude towards these changes was measured with an item providing seven response choices ranging from dislike very much to like very much. Favorable orientation towards change was also significantly related positively with frequency of communion, but not with sex, age, social class, education, or membership in parish organizations. The dogmatism measure was not significantly related with any of these factors.
