Abstract

New discourses that question traditional gender roles linked to motherhood and fatherhood have recently gained visibility. Similarly, there is a weakening of the father's role as economic provider and a greater demand for more involved and caring fatherhood to achieve real co-responsibility of care between men and women. This paper analyses the predominant images of being a father and being a mother in Spanish society. The Spanish General Social Survey (cis, 2018) has been used for this purpose. The data show that the social perception of those surveyed is that traditional gender roles are still in force in society: while the father is linked to a role of economic provider, the mother has a more diversified profile, but is still responsible to a greater extent than her partner for the most routine tasks. This perception, however, is not implemented to the same extent in all social categories. Traditional roles are more mentioned by less religious people, women and those with a higher level of education and income. These re sults suggest some political implications that are linked to the social demand for greater co-responsibility.
