Abstract

The article considers the health effect of wearing corsets. In his book "Über die Wirkungen der Schnürbrüste/On the Effects of the Corset," Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring claimed that the back-laced corset constituted a health hazard by compressing the ribs and other internal organs. The use of corsets can lead to tuberculosis, cancer, and scoliosis. Sömmerring's illustrations on the effects of a corset are presented. These illustrations contrasts the natural shape of the female body with the artificial hourglass figure produced by a corset.
