Abstract

Background: Anemia among Indonesian adolescents is still prevalent, even though the anemia prevention program targeting adolescent girls has been implemented. The program's effectiveness is strongly influenced by the awareness of its target. Objectives: To describe the knowledge, attitude, as well as practices toward the prevention of anemia in adolescent girls fromlow socio-economic backgrounds in Makassar city, Indonesia. Methods: Survey using an online questionnaire was conducted on 150 young women who were enrolled in a public high school in Makassar. There were 30 questions related to knowledge, attitude, and practices to prevent anemia distributed to randomly selected respondents. Descriptive analysis was conducted to see the distribution of adolescents based on the measured variables. Bivariate analysis with Spearman's test was conducted to see the relationships of knowledge and attitude with practices. Results: Knowledge about anemia is still low, where 65.3% of respondents had insufficient knowledge and 34.7% had good knowledge. The majority of respondents had a positive attitude (97.3%) towards anemia and its prevention, nevertheless, 2.7% still had a negative attitude. Most of the respondents also had not implemented anemia prevention measures sufficiently (86.7%), whereas only 13.3% had well-implemented practices. Knowledge was not correlated with practices (p>0.05) while attitude was correlated with practices (p<0.05). Conclusions: Adolescent girls in the context of this study still have poor knowledge and practices on anemia and its prevention, although their attitudes tended to be positive. Educational efforts and other promotive approaches need to be improved to encourage behavioral changes among adolescent girls.
