Correlation between Sports Participation and Work Performance of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Staff: A Preliminary Study.

The oft-said statement "A fit employee is a productive employee" was the basis of this research, henceforth, the objective was to assess the correlation between Universiti Teknology MARA's (UiTM) staff who participated in sports or any physical activities, versus their work performance. A cross-sectional survey design was employed for this study. Also, the respondents were identified through stratified random sampling and bivariate analyses were carried out on the data collected. Prior to the actual data collection, the instrument has to be tested for validity and reliability. As such, forty respondents were targeted for this preliminary study, of which 27 or 67.5% responded to the online survey. From Pearson's correlation analysis, there is a weak correlation (r = .058, p=.774) between the two variables measured, which are the participation in sport activities and the annual performance appraisal marks. It was hypothesized that a positive relationship would exist between these two variables but there is a weak relationship. Based on this empirical evidence, it is hoped that the university will revise its policy by emphasizing the need for its 4,000 employees to be more physically active as the benefits gained spills over into other aspects of the individual such as a wellbeing, healthy lifestyle and social existence.
