Abstract

Literature plays a fundamental role in the development of boys’ and girls’ socialisation and their identification with different gender roles. This study addresses this idea through the quantitative analysis of various questions posed to 2124 5th and 6th grade Primary School students from 17 schools asking what they had learned after reading some of the books most read by boys and girls aged between 10 and 13 years in the 2018 Reading Habits and Book Purchasing report. The aim was to check whether these pupils are influenced by YLL and whether they construct various stereotypes, including gender stereotypes, from their reading. We also identified the differences between boys and girls with regard to the learning they extract from their reading and also showed the different reception of the various readings chosen. The quantitative results obtained show that there are indeed differences in boys’ and girls’ perceptions of the readings, which leads to the conclusion that certain stereotypes are generated, which are detailed here.
