Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes of music department students at Fine Arts High Schools in the Southeastern Anatolia Region towards polyphonic choir classes. The sample group of the study, which was conducted in the screening model based on situation determination; of TOBB Fine Arts High School (Batman), Diyarbakır Fine Arts High School (Diyarbakır), Mardin Fine Arts High School (Mardin), Kazancı Bedih Fine Arts High School (Şanlıurfa) located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The study group consists of a total of 120 music department students in the 11th and 12th grades. To obtain data, the "Choir Attitude Scale" consisting of 20 items developed by Kaya (2011) was used. The data obtained from the research were analyzed using the SPSS 10.0 package program and evaluated as frequency (f) and percentage (%). Additionally, a t-test was used to determine attitude differences based on gender and class variables regarding students' attitudes towards polyphonic choir classes. As a result of the research, it is observed that the majority of students have a positive attitude towards polyphonic choir classes despite their preference for listening to and singing Arabesque and Turkish Folk Music. It is recommended that the results obtained from the attitude scale applied to the choir course be examined meticulously, that studies be carried out to improve the negative attitudes stated towards the course, and that the teaching process be enriched and different teaching methods be used to ensure that students are active in the course in order to increase students' interest in the course.
