Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of typically developing 54-69-month-old children towards their peers with special needs in an inclusive preschool class through picture analysis. This study, which is a qualitative research, was conducted with a total of 11 classes and 110 students in preschool classrooms with inclusive practices in Istanbul. The data of the study were obtained in a two-stage process: picture analysis and analysis of short interviews about the pictures. During the data collection process of the research, a painting activity was planned in preschool classes under the supervision of the researcher and the classroom teacher, and a structured scenario related to the subject of the painting was used to select the student with special needs as the theme without labeling. At the end of the painting activity, children with typical development were asked descriptive questions about their paintings. In the study, the perceptions of typically developing children towards their peers with special needs were analyzed under 6 main themes and 22 sub-themes related to these themes. According to the results of the study, it was determined that children with special needs were usually drawn alone in the drawings of typically developing children. Most of the typically developing children drew the size, head and body ratio, arms and hands, legs and feet differently than their peers with special needs. In the study, it was also observed that typically developing children tried to include their peers with special needs in games, tried to make them happy, and helped them with daily life and self-care skills.
