- Abstract
This study aimed to explore the STEM skill levels of pre-service mathematics and science teachers in Turkey. The research was conducted through cross-sectional survey design. The 43-item 5-point Likert-type Basic STEM Skill Levels Perception Scale was used in the study. By collecting data from 445 pre-service teachers across various universities, the study found that their overall STEM skill level perceptions were at a high level. The pre-service science teachers had the highest average score in the "Science" dimension, while pre-service mathematics teachers had the highest average score in the "Mathematics" dimension. Moreover, the study investigated the potential impact of demographic variables including gender, department, and grade level on pre-service teachers' STEM skill level perceptions. However, the results showed that these variables did not have a significant effect on STEM skill level perceptions. These findings provide valuable insights into the pre-service mathematics and science teachers' perceptions of STEM skills, and can serve as a useful resource for teacher training programs and curriculum development. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of promoting STEM education and ensuring that pre-service teachers possess the necessary skills to effectively teach STEM subjects.
