- Abstract
Environmental degradation resulting from human activities is reaching serious levels today and achieving sustainable development is becoming more important. There are many reasons for environmental degradation and the release of greenhouse gas emissions is among these reasons. To ensure sustainable development, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced and prevented. Therefore, there is a need to determine the emissions caused by the transportation sector, which is among the sectors that cause greenhouse gas emissions, and to take appropriate measures. The transportation sector in Türkiye is among the sectors with the highest greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, determining the emission level of the provinces in the country is important for the measures to be taken at local and national levels. In this context, the study aims to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions caused by road transportation in Kayseri, one of the metropolitan cities in Türkiye, between 2010 and 2021, using the Tier 1 method among the approaches recommended by the IPCC. Accordingly, while the total greenhouse gas emission in Kayseri province was 1,076.44 GgCO2 in 2010, it was 1,797.68 GgCO2 in 2021, with an total increase of 67.00%. It is concluded that the most greenhouse gas emissions CO2 emissions are caused by diesel, one of the fuel types. Based on the results achieved, it is expected that comparisons and evaluations made with different criteria will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, and emphasizing the importance of economic tools will guide future studies and regulations.
