- Abstract
Substance abuse is the use of different methods and amounts of drugs, stimulants or recreational substances that can affect health. The fact that substance use includes a process in addition to its physical and psychological scope and has an abstract nature makes it difficult to make sense of this concept. The purpose of this study was to investigate how vocational high school students try to describe the concept of "substance abuse" and how they perceive it. The study group of the research consists of 130 students, 73 boys and 57 girls, who continue their education at Yozgat Bozok University Sorgun Vocational School and Intercession Vocational School in the 2021-2022 academic year. A structured interview form was used as a data collection tool in the research, which was designed using a phenomenological model, one of the qualitative research designs. Content analysis, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used in the analysis of the collected data. As a result of the research, when the metaphorical perceptions produced by the participants regarding the concept of "substance abuse" were examined, it was determined that 73 of the male students and 57 of the female students produced a total of 130 metaphorical perceptions. When similar ones were excluded from the 130 metaphors produced, it was seen that 80 different metaphorical perceptions were developed. In this direction, it was determined that the most frequently produced metaphors by the participants were flower, love and tree. In addition, the metaphorical representations developed by the students regarding the concept of "substance addiction" were examined under 9 different categories. In all categories, metaphors were produced by both gender groups, and it was determined that female students made more frequent metaphorical representations only in the categories of "Substance Addiction as Food Perception" and "Substance Addiction as Material Perception" compared to male students.
