Abstract

This work aims to understand the meanings about early childhood present in the Brazilian documentary "The beginning of life" (Estela Renner, 2016). For this, through Discourse Analysis (DA) concepts, we investigate who the imagined spectator is, the discursive organization of the film and the truth effects established by it. We conclude that, besides the preponderant sense of valuing early childhood care, the work carries other meanings, such as the possibility of a predetermined future for some children, especially those who live in social vulnerability. In addition, we realize that the "truth effects" built for the film's argument, that is, the conditions created by its directors so that the proposed narrative about early childhood is considered "valid", carries silencing of meaning.
