The work stems from a comprehensive research that examines how the image of quilombolas is constructed by two television news programs in Bahia and Maranhão. For this article, we will focus on BATV. We analyzed all the news editions from 2012 to 2019, available on Globoplay, to obtain a representative sample of the news program that reflects social, political, and cultural changes. Our theoretical-methodological approach combines the Theory of Social Representations and the Theories of Journalism, engaging with the framing effect, within the perspective that news produces frames that define and construct reality (Tuchman, 1978). During the period, 17,686 diverse journalistic contents emerged, but the quilombola theme was addressed only on three occasions. We highlight that the images of quilombolas are created by the news program through the production of stigmas and stereotypes.
