Title

Identifying inter-individual social distances in Japanese monkeys.

Authors

Wadat, Kazuo; Ogawa, Hideshi

Abstract

The article discusses a study on the three types of inter-individual distances practiced by Japanese monkeys, Macaca fuscata. These distances are intimate distances less than a meter, personal distance of between 1 to 3 meters and social distance of up to 5 meters. It is noted that social and ecological circumstances influence the inter-individual distances among male and female Japanese monkeys. It is found that monkeys in cold areas form larger clusters. It is also asserted that dispersal of monkeys depends on conditions in the habitat.
