Title

A first record of latrine use by European hedgehogs Erinaceus europaeus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Authors

Jones, Christopher; Jackson, Digger

Abstract

The article discusses two studies, one in New Zealand and the other in Scotland, focused on the use of latrine by European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus. These medium-sized insectivores are known for being solitary, only interacting with others during the breeding season. Both studies made use of radio-transmitters attached on to the hedgehogs to locate their dents. The studies found that there were accumulated hedgehog scats in areas which can be considered as latrine. In the New Zealand study, it was found that hedgehogs prefer dryland habitats.
